Almost everyone buying a new car considers going in for a crossover. Crossovers have been around for a while, but suddenly they started getting really good at giving people what they were looking for. They combine the best from cars and SUVs and offer customers space, safety, comfort, flexibility, and fun. But, you may wonder whether you really need a crossover. Here are five things to consider before buying a crossover.
Costs
Your vehicle operating costs may increase. A crossover is bigger, heavier, and less aerodynamic than other cars. You get more space and flexibility and less fuel efficiency. Crossovers with AWD have lower fuel economy and more long-term maintenance costs. AWD-equipped vehicles also need regular inspections, fluid changes, and other maintenance. Crossovers also need bigger, pricier tires. Their LED or xenon lights are expensive to replace.
Space
If your old sedan is feeling cramped, try installing a cargo carrier. They cost a few hundred dollars and can be mounted on a roof rack or trailer hitch. You’ll have more space for gear, bags, luggage, camping supplies, and anything else. This may solve your need for space. You can always rent a bigger car for a few days every year with the money keeping your sedan saves you.
Towing
All crossover models don’t have great towing abilities. Check the capacity of the model you’re interested in and confirm. Crossovers with CVT have even lower towing capabilities than some sedans. Check fuel usage as well. If you only have to tow a trailer once or twice a year, you could rent a truck and save money.
AWD
It’s likely that you don’t need AWD. It’s nice to have when the weather turns, but how often have you used it or needed it in the past? So, there’s no reason to spend a lot buying a crossover with AWD. Also, know that there are many sedans and compact cars with AWD. Consider if they meet your needs.
Winter
No onboard systems, including traction control and AWD, can replace winter tires. If you want predictable control and stopping power over snow, you will need these tires. So don’t think that your crossover will help you forego this cost.
