Quick Tips for Choosing the Best Car Tires

If you want to change your tires, look for the right size and characteristics you want. And start this process long before you actually need to change tires.

Original vs. New

But still consider the original equipment that came from the manufacturer. Those tires were designed for your car and will fit well. They will optimize your car’s performance, comfort, safety, and fuel efficiency. You can find which tires your manufacturer provided by looking at them or checking online. If you do want to change, you’ll need to do a little research.

Tire Size

Check the driver’s side door jamb for a sticker that shows the size of the tires that fit your car and the recommended air pressure. The string of numbers and letters that you see tell you the tire’s width, the height as compared to the width, and the inner diameter of the tire. Ideally, look for tires that match these specifications. If you’re shopping online, you’ll find tires on a retailer’s website. Enter the year, make, and model of your car, and you’ll find a list of recommended tires there. Then compare their reviews and prices.

Handling and Comfort

The tires will decide how your vehicle feels when you drive it. You need to not only choose tires that are the right size but those that optimize handling and braking. Also, look for tires that give you a comfortable ride while reducing road noise. There’s likely to only be a few brands for your car. Those tires are meant to offer the ride, quietness, and handling that make up your car’s personality.

All-Season, Summer, or Winter

All-season tires are the most popular because they work through the year. They provide a good balance of dry and wet grip and modest traction on ice. Winter tires are only meant to be used when the temperature drops below freezing. You’ll need to have an extra set of wheels or have an installer swap them out when the seasons change. These tires have a deeper tread and more slits to break the ice and bite into snow. Summer tires are best for performance driving and provide a good grip on roads in warm temperatures and at high speeds.
